Guru Ratings
Susan Jeffers
Bad.
Remember my ratings criteria. I’m not judging these gurus on “global” or moral values, but very specific criteria. Many of my favorite books would be rated “bad” by my criteria for self-help (probably, because they are not self-help books). My ratings don’t reflect how well an author met his own goals, but how well they met my criteria for useful, accurate self-help.
Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway (1987)
The title says it all. Jeffers says, “I know you’re scared, but . . . just do it!” Well thanks, doc.
Jeffers offers a few feeble encouragements, like “Choices aren’t opportunities for mistakes, but for growth.” But she doesn’t give you much to do about your fear.
She also jumps into irrelevant metaphysics. She says the “Law of Universal Energy” can help you beat your fears. Whatever that means.
The rest of her books are nearly 100% fluff. They echo her debut.
