Guru Ratings

David Cottrell

Bad.

Remember my ratings criteria. I’m not judging these gurus on “global” or moral values, but very specific criteria. Many of my favorite books would be rated “bad” by my criteria for self-help (probably, because they are not self-help books). My ratings don’t reflect how well an author met his own goals, but how well they met my criteria for useful, accurate self-help.

12 Choices That Lead to Your Success (2005)

A tiny book of 12 obvious choices for success:

  1. Don’t be a victim.
  2. Commit.
  3. Choose good values.
  4. Have integrity.
  5. Do something.
  6. Learn from failure.
  7. Be enthusiastic.
  8. Persevere.
  9. Build good relationships.
  10. Embrace criticism.
  11. Face reality.
  12. Leave a legacy.

Bloggers write lists like this a dozen times a week. Much of his tips are bad advice in certain common situations. Should you commit to a bad partner or contract? Should you persevere through an abusive relationship?

His book reminds me of bullshit motivational posters.
