Guru Ratings

Robert Allen

Bad.

Remember my ratings criteria. I’m not judging these gurus on “global” or moral values, but very specific criteria. Many of my favorite books would be rated “bad” by my criteria for self-help (probably, because they are not self-help books). My ratings don’t reflect how well an author met his own goals, but how well they met my criteria for useful, accurate self-help.

Robert G. Allen is a scam artist. John T. Reed wrote a thorough profile of Allen’s unprofitable and illegal advice. He also wrote a critical view of “nothing down” deals.

Creating Wealth (1983)

Even the updated version contains illegal advice and outdated data.

Multiple Streams of Income (2005)

Here, Allen says to spend less and save more, then develop many streams of income with:

  • the stock market
  • real estate
  • multi-level marketing
  • information and product licensing
  • internet marketing

As usual, Allen makes big promises and mixes obvious advice with bad advice. Each of these money-making strategies are much better covered by other authors.
